Approaches to treatment of concept "region" in a modern economic science are considered, their comparative analysis is spent. The potential of spatial economy which leaning against the concept of new economic geography, integrates results of political economic, cluster and institutional-evolutionary approaches, deduces them on new qualitative level of theoretical generalisation, is proved. The subject of regional economy from the point of view of the spatial-economic approach is specified.
