The theory of the central places and evolution of the road system in the Altay region

Transportation system plays an important role in socio-economic development of both the country and the region. Thus, the article describes the motor road system in the Altay region, its condition and financial maintenance taking into consideration the budget and the geographical peculiarities of the region. There is an examination of natural and financial factors that define the condition of the road system in the Altay region in comparison with other Siberian federal states. The article gives a review of theoretical basics in economic space, the theory of Kristaller’s central places. The theoretical model is employed into practice by means of the specific model developed for the Altay region that considers the influence of its big cities and already existing road system. The article also introduces the plan of further development of the regional road system.
