Given the instability of "soil tillage" resulting in the instability of earnings of rural population, the latter has long been engaged in various kinds of by-work allowing the poorer farmers to earn their living. The paper in question analyses the current standing of subsidiary businesses and crafts, with the focus on their development in Kostroma district.
