The suggested article investigates two possible basic variants of development of the regions of the South federal district being considered as single object of state regulation on the eve of transition to innovation type of development of Russian economy. According to possible scenarios of socio-economic development of the Russia Federation up to 2020, the author examines as alternatives inertial (pessimistic) and innovation (optimistic) variants of development of the South Russia.
