Subject. This article focuses on the limitrophe potential of Russia's border regions as the ability of a territory to reproduce extensively under the ambivalent influence of the state border (both a resource and a source of vulnerability). Objectives. The study aims to assess the resilience of border regions to external shocks, analyze past crises, and model hypothetical threats. Methods. For the study, I used the methods of stress testing and quantitative assessment based on a system of simple proxy indicators. Results. The article identifies key adaptation resources. It also shows that Buryatia has an average stability, and reveals that regions with a single-industry transit economy, weak institutions and outdated infrastructure are the most vulnerable. Conclusions. The border regions stability is not an automatic consequence of a favorable geographical location, but is determined by the dynamic ability to transform. The conclusions are of the greatest importance for the Far Eastern Federal District as a zone of increased sensitivity to changes in the external environment.
