Subject. This article discusses the methodological approach to the economic security consideration in the system of criteria for the economic systems effectiveness. Objectives. The study aims to develop and test the economic security index that allows quantifying key factors determining the sustainability of countries' economic systems. Methods. For the study, we used theoretical analysis synthesis methods, empirical approbation, and the panel data methodology with fixed effects. Results. The article reveals that countries with a high economic security index have higher growth rates and less exposure to external shocks. Conclusions. Taking into account the important economic security factors makes it possible to expand the scope of traditional economic assessment models. Heterodox theories emphasize the importance of macroeconomic sustainability, structural diversification, and risk management. The proposed methodology can help analyze national economies, develop economic policy strategies, and assess the long-term economic systems effectiveness.
