Subject. This article discusses the specifics of the Western border regions functioning and development. Objectives. The study aims to analyze the main development components of the fifteen Western border regions of Russia for the period from 2000 to 2024, and determine the cumulative contribution of these regions to the development of the national economy. Methods. For the study, we used economic and statistical analysis. Results. The article reveals that all the fifteen Western border regions under consideration have a predominantly agrarian economic profile. Conclusions. The intensification of the identified trends in the long term will lead to the "desertification" of a significant part of the Western State border of Russia, since the two opposite poles of the country's economic activity will concentrate an increasing amount of resources (human, material, etc.).
