Subject. This article discusses development of the hydropower industry.
Objectives. The article aims to analyze key trends in the global hydropower development, and determine the role of hydropower in the global energy balance.
Methods. For the study, we used the methods of systems data analysis, induction and deduction, as well as methods of measurement, comparison, expert assessment, and economic analysis.
Results. The article reveals current processes and trends in the world hydropower development, and identifies the leaders and the role of hydropower in the global energy balance.
Conclusions. Hydropower is one of the main electricity sources. An important trend in hydropower today is the increasing role of the global financial market and investment in the industry.
