Subject. The article considers the development of Russia in the context of geopolitical tension, the problem of taking into account the sectoral specifics of the region's economy. Objectives. The aim is to identify key threats and risks, make recommendations for improving the sustainability of the region's economic development (on the Ulyanovsk Oblast case). Methods. The study employs economic and mathematical research methods. Results. In the Ulyanovsk Oblast, there is an increase in indicators such as industrial production volume, industrial production index, and regional budget revenues. In terms of investment growth rates, the region holds a leading position among the subjects of the Volga Federal District. In 2024, there was an increase in the level of financial and economic security in the Ulyanovsk Oblast compared to the period of the COVID-19 pandemic and the beginning of the special military operation. Conclusions. The main risks for the Ulyanovsk Oblast are related to low diversification of the economy and budgetary dependency on the Federal center. Stimulating the development of high-tech industries, improving social infrastructure, and supporting small and medium-sized businesses will contribute to an increase in the level of financial and economic security in the region.
