Subject. The article discusses contradictions arising in the process of alternative energy development. Objectives. The study aims at the analysis of various approaches to the development of green energy. Methods. The study draws on statistical analysis. Results. The paper considers theoretical discussion on green energy among Russian and Chinese scientists, analyzes forecasts for the development of energy in Russia and China, and defines the role of green energy in the energy balance of the two countries. Conclusions. China and Russia support the development of green energy, but the priorities for the two countries are energy security, meeting the needs of the economy and the population for energy resources.
