Subject. This article considers sanctions as a form of non-military coercion and political tactics. Objectives. The article aims to assess the effects of the application of sanctions against Russia by the United States and the European Union. Methods. For the study, I used the methods of statistical, comparative, and structural analyses. Results. Based on various approaches to the application of economic restrictions, the article clarifies the definition of the concept of Sanctions. It finds that energy sanctions against Russia have not caused the devastating damage that Western leaders had hoped for. Conclusions. Russia's response to the sanctions imposed by the West has led to an increase in the role of the State in the economy and contributed to a shift in the country's foreign economic activity towards Asia.
