Subject The article discusses the transit potential of Russia as part of the EAEU with evidence from major infrastructure projects.
Objectives The research studies the role of the transit potential of Russia and EAEU in creating and modernizing international transport corridors.
Methods The research involves principles of systems analysis and formal logic.
Results I scrutinized the current development of economic integration in Russia and EAEU countries and analyzed how the cross-border trade influences the overall economic integration. Illustrating the case of Russia, I identified impediments to the transit potential of the EAEU countries as part of international transport corridors. The article reviews China's experience in creating transportation and trans-shipment hubs to coordinate cargo flows and apply the results to international transport corridors of Russia in line with the existing specifics.
Conclusions and Relevance Although substantial research into the transit potential development of Russia and the EAEU countries has been conducted, there are still some challenging issues to be resolved in order to develop the transport infrastructure. Russia lacks investment in transport infrastructure, scarce private and public-private projects in this sector, and sees the unbalanced development of the transportation system. These obstacles prevent the effective development of international transport corridors and form the uniform transport space of the EAEU. It is necessary to create transportation and trans-shipment hubs as part of projects for international transportation corridors to ensure the smooth development of the uniform transportation system in Russia and the EAEU.
