Importance The article substantiates the reasonableness of evaluating the economic security of a certain region, reviews methods to determine the level of the region’s economic security. The article outlines key areas and indicators describing the economic security of the Novosibirsk Oblast, respective threats and remedies. Objectives The research formulates the concept the region’s economic security, and principal methods that can be used to evaluate it. We identify strengths, development constraints, development paths and possible threats to the Novosibirsk Oblast. Methods The research involves methods of a systems, logic, statistical analysis. Results Illustrating the Novosibirsk Oblast, we provide the rationale for evaluating and managing the region’s economic security so to ensure the sustainable development of either certain areas and the State, as a whole. The article presents our definition of the region’s economic security as an evaluation category revealing the current and possible state of the socio-economic system of a Russian region. We also propose indicators forming the level of the region’s economic security. Conclusions and Relevance The proposed indicators and approaches allow measuring the level of the region’s economic security and its development prospects. The findings can be useful to specify and adjust regional socio-economic policies.
