Importance The article focuses on an analysis of activities within the import substitution strategies in the leading sectors of Russia’s economy. Objectives The research analyzes the availability, development and implementation of activities within the import substitution strategy, and determines their composition in relation to the specifics of production processes of certain enterprises in the leading sectors of the Russian economy. Methods The methodological framework includes certain principles of methodological documents of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation. We also gathered publicly available information in official websites of some enterprises in the leading sectors of the Russian economy. Results The research helped to reveal that the enterprises in the leading sectors had import substitution strategies, and analyze specific activities relating to their production processes. Conclusions and Relevance Notwithstanding certain achievements in the implementation of import substitution strategies in some leading sectors, it is prematurely to talk about their completion. Considering tightening sanctions, enterprises in the leading sectors of the Russian economy should be prepared to outline new and more efficient activities when formulating and implementing import substitution strategies.
