Importance Considering the globalization and onset of the multipolar world, innovative focus of national economies becomes a requirement for their successful development. Russia possesses substantial innovative potential. However, there is no common and clear understanding of the successful use of the potential worldwide.
Objectives The research identifies the main specifics of Russia’s involvement in global competition of national innovative economies after crisis phenomena in the late 2000s.
Methods The research relies upon a conceptual analysis of views on national innovative systems. I used annual ratings of Bloomberg and World Intellectual Property Organization.
Results National innovative systems generate a mechanism that would allow countries to compete. Top-10 leading economies of the world remained almost unchanged, with Russia strengthening its positions. The difference between Russia’s position in ratings can be explained by absolutely different ranking methods.
Conclusions and Relevance Global competition of national innovative economies constitutes a phenomenon associated with the globalization. Leading innovation-driven economies demonstrate rather tough competition, however this competition does not result in sharp changes in their list. Russia takes part in this competition actively and successfully. There are some risks for supporting the appropriate innovative competitiveness of Russia. Russia has an effective innovation policy but it still needs to be adjusted to respective risks.
