Importance The article discusses the U.S. foreign trade that demonstrated quite good results in 2015–2016 before the presidential elections, considering the so called new normality of global economy. We study the Russian–U.S. trade relationships, which had higher indicators than expected under various factors and reciprocal sanctions. Objectives The research evaluates contemporary processes in economy and foreign trade of the USA. Along with the U.S. megaprojects of the Trans-Atlantic and Trans-Pacific partnerships, those processes may change the geo-economic map of the world and influence Russia’s position in the system of international economic relations. Methods We used methods of logic and statistical analysis to examine contemporary trends in the development of the U.S. foreign trade development. Conclusions and Relevance Seeing the growing tensions in the Russian–U.S. relationships, it is premature to discuss their reload. However, notwithstanding some contradictions and mutual distrust in foreign trade, the USA continues to be an important economic partner for Russia. Trade relationships between the USA and Russia rest on practical interests certain business communities in both countries have to keep for their stable and constructive development. The recently elected President is expected to continue the trend.
