Importance The article focuses on the subject since innovation and respective items of intellectual property are getting a greater role in the global economy. We study international economic relations arising from the cross-border exchange of technologies that unleash innovative development of economies.
Objectives We identify principal trends in international trends in intellectual property items at the current phase of its development and substantiate promising areas where Russia may occupy promising niches in the global market of intellectual property.
Methods We use methods of statistical analysis and comparison to examine trends in international trade in intellectual property and factors that influence it. We approached to the forecasting method in order to outline proposals for substantiating promising areas where Russia might occupy its niches in the global market of intellectual property.
Results We analyzed principal trends in international trade in intellectual property items and determined what measures and activities should be undertaken to form promising niches for Russia in the global market of intellectual property.
Conclusions and Relevance We conclude that Russia can become an incumbent player in one of the advanced innovation segments if it adopts appropriate innovative policies for creating, commercializing and exchanging intellectual property items.
