Importance Economic security of the nation becomes a national development priority under the existing economic and political circumstances. Sustainable economic development is a cornerstone for ensuring economic security. The article shows that external and internal factors and their effect revealed the vulnerability of Russia's economy, thus requiring safeguards for stable development of the country and, therefore, economic security. Objectives The research defines sustainable economic development as substance of economic security of the nation on the basis of statistical data. Methods The article reviews the position of Russia's economy in 2015, identifies the concept of sustainable economic development. As I find out, it is fundamental and critical to address those aspects and issues that would drive the economic development and strengthen the national economic security. Results Using statistical data, I analyzed the economic position of Russia in 2015, present and substantiate areas for the national development as part of the economic security strategy. Conclusions and Relevance I conclude that sustainable economic development will lay the basis for economic security of the nation. Sustainable economic development was proved to require some measures to increment production capacity of the nation through innovative development of manufacturing sector, increase investing activities and improve monetary policy.
