National identity of the place as a factor of tourism development in the region: Toponymy and ethno-futurism in Karelia

Importance The article discusses inbound tourism as the region's socio-economic development driver, studies domestic and foreign tourists and focuses on socially and economically significant innovative forms of domestic tourism in the Republic of Karelia.
Objectives The research identifies the specifics of the region's ethnic identity, studies the role of place names and ethno-futurism to increase the tourism attractiveness of the region, devises a model to practically use toponymy and ethno-futurism for developing new domestic tourism forms. The research generally pursues resolving a multidisciplinary scientific issue, i.e. substantiating contemporary forms of domestic tourism development in the ethnic region through a combination of historical, cultural, sociological and economic approaches.
Methods The research represents an empirical study based on the sociological and investigative method (formalized interview). Relying upon the logic method and methods of analysis, synthesis, I outlined a phased project model for developing tourism destinations on the basis of toponymy and ethno-futurism in the Republic of Karelia.
Results I obtained such data that allow concluding on that place names were very attractive and significant for local population and inbound tourists. The article presents project ideas on how to practically apply place names and ethno-futurism to develop innovative forms of cultural and historical domestic tourism of the northern ethnic region of the Republic of Karelia.
Conclusions and Relevance Developing cultural and historical tourism on the basis of place names and ethno-futurism are a promising direction of domestic tourism as the region's socio-economic development factor. Representatives of the regional community drive this area. Innovative forms of national identity and their development fuel the advancement of the regional community, diversity and strengthening of cross-national ties, thus making the entire Russian society evolve.
