Importance The development level of rural areas mainly creates conditions for ensuring food sovereignty and food security of the nation. Hence, it is reasonable to provide efficient State financial aid to sustainable development of rural areas as part of respective special-purpose programs. Objectives We analyze State finance of activities for sustainable development of rural areas in the Republic of Mordovia. Methods The research applies such general scientific methods and techniques as scientific abstraction, induction and deduction, comparative and matching analysis, synthesis. Results We analyzed the existing approaches to determine whether rural areas are on track of sustainable development, and review the most significant programs for supporting socio-economic development of rural areas in the Republic of Mordovia. We also scrutinized the total amount and structure of finance of sustainable development activities in rural areas of the Republic of Mordovia as part of the State special-purpose programs. Conclusions and Relevance The contemporary level of State finance for rural areas is insufficient for their sustainable development. In current circumstances, agricultural policies should address key issues of rural area development at the federal and regional levels, i.e. poverty reduction, growth in life quality and rural areas' performance of conventional economic and social functions.
