Importance The article investigates the key issues of developing agricultural entities in the Republic of Dagestan. Objectives The research identifies what caused the continuing crisis in the development of agricultural entities in Dagestan. Methods As part of the research, I applied a cross-disciplinary, economic and statistical analysis, described various aspects of agricultural entities' operations, determined the regional specifics of agricultural production, and the cause-an-effect relations. Results I examined business and legal structures of agricultural entities, which were typical of the region. There are mainly cooperatives, which were incorporated when collective farms of the Soviet times were privatized. Currently, agriculture is unprofitable in mountainous areas, and agricultural entities work in lands of distant pasture cattle rearing, i.e. plain areas where production and social infrastructures are underdeveloped. Whereas agricultural land is scarce, Dagestan does not use nearly a one-third of the available agricultural land. Conclusions and Relevance I determined the following measures to foster agricultural entities of the regions: improvement of institutional relationships of land use, selective State aid to agricultural entities, development of production and logistic infrastructure in the agricultural sector of the region. The findings can be used by the regional authorities when improving the system for managing agricultural entities.
