Importance The article overviews the process of transforming the reproduction structure in the Russian and Chinese regions involved in the cross-border liaison between the Russian Federation and People's Republic of China.
Objectives The research investigates how many structural changes have happened in the border regions for the recent years, identifies causes and the quality of the changes.
Methods Using appropriate indexes, we performed an empirical analysis of structural shifts in economies of the border regions, studied the regions' labor productivity and compared this indicator in the countries.
Results The quality of structural shifts is found to differ. China sees an increase in services, including the financial sector, meanwhile the neighboring regions of Russia expand the primary sector of the economy.
Conclusions and Relevance We conclude that there is no evident correlation between the current transformation processes and ongoing Russian-Chinese investment projects as part of the effective cooperation program of regions of the Far East, West Siberia of Russia and the north-west of China.
