Importance National space systems have caused many accidents and various emergency situations recently, thus making us believe that the Russian missile and space sector lacks a system of economic protection, with attempts to protect investment in space project through conventional methods giving scarce results. Objectives The research pursues systematizing threats, risks and substantiating the principles of setting up and designating the concept for economic protection of space projects. Methods The research employs methods of analysis and synthesis, and modeling. Results We determined and classified threats and risks inherent in the space sector, devised methods of economic protection of space projects and rules for applying them. The choice of certain economic protection measures usually depends on subjective assessment of risks and their detrimental effect. We systematized risks, identified the main threats and principles of setting up economic protection of innovative projects following the interests of the Russian Federation in the space sector. High quality of human and production capital will underlie the system of economic protection of space projects. Measures for economic protection of space projects include diversification, hedging, reserves and insurance, which should be applied in line with the principles of adequacy, compliance, and confidentiality. Conclusions and Relevance If set up, the system for economic protection of space projects will considerably reduce damage caused with risks inherent in the space sector, streamline the launch of new missile and space equipment and technologies, preserve and expand a market share of space services, and contribute to innovative modernization of the Russian economy as a whole.
