Importance The article assesses the adequacy and effectiveness of the existing structures and models of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as a platform to discuss the regional security issues, trends in the political, military and economic situation in Central Asia.
Objectives The research seeks to assess the compliance and efficiency of the existing structures and models of the SCO development in order to identify areas for improving its performance for socio-political and socio-economic development of the members and ensuring the regional security in Central Asia.
     Methods
The research analyzes interests of the political actors in Central Asia. Using political and economic analysis methods, I evaluate SCO's development prospects as the leading organization that ensures the region's political, economic and military security.
Results I suggest evaluating the existing structures and models of the SCO development as a platform for a dialogue on regional security issues that correlate with political, military and economic trends in Central Asia. I reviewed interests and approaches of the SCO members and observers and other countries in ensuring their own security. The proposed approach allows identifying priorities of the region's socio-political and socio-economic development.
Conclusions and Relevance Whereas Russia implements it Eurasian mission, ensuring the regional security of Central Asia remains a priority. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization and its structures may facilitate ensuring the regional security of Central Asia.
