Importance Assessment and analysis of the quality of life is still vital. Researches into the quality of life in the Russian regions are of special interest in terms of the national economic security.
Objectives The research mainly examines the methods for assessing the standard of living in Russia using an integral method, and evaluates the region's economic security criteria.
Methods Using the integral method, I reviewed the socio-economic development of the Russian regions, determined boundaries of integral areas in line with the scale that is accepted as an economic security criterion. I analyzed 29 baseline indicators of official statistics, which are aggregated into six groups, and determined the range of criteria for assessing the economic security.
Results The regions with relatively high quality of life demonstrate less difference in their specific indices. Those regions display a relatively high level of socio-economic development. It mostly indicates dominance of other specific indices that determine the integral Quality of Life Index. In regions, where the integral index is lower than the average one, low quality of life stems from weak economy that generates an excess in manpower, shadow employment, and low income.
Conclusions and Relevance I conclude that the Quality of Life Index should be regarded as a comprehensive indicator, resulting indicator of the region's socio-economic development, thus being the region's economic security criterion.
