Assessing the level of the regional economic security in the Sakhalin Oblast and economic security trends within the period of 1990 through 2025

Importance The research examines the economic security indicators of the Sakhalin oblast: gross regional product, investment in equity, unemployment rate, current domestic spending on R&D; percentage of innovative products out of the total industrial production; percentage of people living below the minimum subsistence level, decile ratio of differentiation of population's earnings and percentage of machine-building and metalworking out of the total industrial production.
     Objectives The article presents a comparative description of the economic security level in the Sakhalin оblast so to find areas for enhancing its socio-economic development and the regional economic security level.
     Methods Using statistical and econometric methods, I evaluate prospects for changes in economic security of the Sakhalin оblast and other border regions in the Far East of the Russian Federation.
     Results I propose an approach to comparative evaluation of the region's economic security level. I also analyzed the contemporary approach to ensuring the economic security of the Sakhalin оblast and other border regions in the Far East of the Russian Federation in the current circumstances.
     Conclusions and Relevance I conclude that while Russia is implementing its Eurasian mission, ensuring economic security of the Sakhalin оblast and other border regions in the Far East should be a priority. The proposed approach to comparative evaluation of economic security of the Sakhalin oblast and other border regions in the Far East will allow identifying priorities of the regional socio-economic development in the current circumstances.
