Importance The article overviews issues of attracting investment to improve the regional transportation infrastructure. The State is to secure the national interests and organize the comprehensive development of infrastructure, considering public and business needs. However, this becomes feasible only if the State aid is provided, meanwhile most transportation projects are not attractive and interesting for the private sector. Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that various regions have different opportunities for raising funds and access to them.
Objectives The research pursues analyzing trends in investment and conditions that influence the regions' investment opportunities. It also identifies priority areas for attracting investment in transportation and infrastructure projects.
Methods I apply the methods of comparative, logic, economic and statistical analyses.
Results The article represents a comprehensive analysis of dynamics of investment in economy and the transportation sector of the Sverdlovsk region, and evaluates the investment climate of this industrially developed region. I examine the specifics of transportation and infrastructure projects, which impacts their attractiveness for the private investors.
Conclusions and Relevance The Sverdlovsk region possesses its own high investment potential and favorable environment for raising funds as compared with neighboring areas of the Urals and most regions of Russia. I determine some types of transportation and infrastructure projects, which are feasible with private investments through the Public Private Partnership. Assuming the scarcity of investment resources, federal and regional authorities should ensure such conditions so to improve the investment attractiveness and mitigate risks for private investors.
