Importance In the current rapidly changing environment, the potential of quality management systems of the Russian entities is not completely activated due to some objective and subjective factors. In particular, the role of the systems is underestimated in the context of increasing the companies' competitiveness.
Objectives The objective of the research is to identify and substantiate issues of quality management systems in the Russian entities, which downgrade the potential of these systems.
Methods The article presents the outcome of empirical research into the effect of ISO 9000 on the quality management systems in the real sector of economy and servicing sector.
Results The research reveals key implementation factors, benefits from using and the main problems of ISO 9001:2009. Furthermore, I determine the top executives' attitude to using ISO 9004:2009 and the draft version of ISO 9001:2015. The article presents our conclusions on the main areas where the potential of the Russian quality management systems is not utilized sufficiently.
Conclusions and Relevance The Russian entities fail to unfold the potential of the contemporary quality management systems. First of all, it refers to satisfying customers' needs, involving the top management into quality management, and stems from insufficient attempts to implement the process-based approach to management. To increase the competitiveness of companies, they should change their attitude to the quality management system and basic principles of operations in line with the consumers' market paradigm.
