Importance Sustainable development of rural areas is the key to not only food security but also the territorial integrity of the country. The current level of domestic agriculture increases the significance of the problem of stable functioning of this sector to the extreme. Objectives The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of agricultural enterprises in the sustainable development of the economy of the region. The authors defined the objectives, firstly, to analyze the current state and contribution of agricultural enterprises to the economy of the region: the dynamics of property, production and performance indicators. Secondly, to assess the dynamics of tax and insurance payments by agricultural enterprises of the Saratov region to the budget and off-budget funds. Third, to identify the most economically sustainable territories in the region, and determine their position in the classification in accordance with local rating. Methods By using the economic and statistical methods, the authors assess production performance, examine the role of agricultural enterprises of the region in providing the population with food and industrial raw materials, replenishment of budgetary and extra-budgetary funds, group administrative areas of the Saratov region on the gained rating. Results For the period analyzed, the authors note the strengthening of material base of agricultural enterprises of the region, the increase in production while reducing the profitability of agricultural production. However, there is clearly considerable tax and insurance premiums increase in the Federal and regional budgets, and off-budget funds. Conclusions and Relevance Considering the contribution of agricultural enterprises in the economy of the region, the authors classified administrative areas in accordance with the potential of sustainable development of rural areas. The authors concluded that this classification will help to identify priority areas in order to ensure the pace of social development.
