The article considers some of the possible scenarios for the development in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of foreign troops. The author examines the potential of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the ability to counter possible threats and challenges to its participants. Considering the current status of the SCO, the author comes to the conclusion that it was necessary to refine its status. The paper proposes some measures to improve the efficiency of the SCO in maintaining regional security and stability. The article considers that only under certain conditions the Shanghai Cooperation Organization can become a real factor in regional and world politics. The author emphasizes that the main of these conditions include: the development of regulatory frameworks for the SCO, improving its structure and to give it the ability to solve the security challenges not only by peaceful but also by military means; development of synergies with other international organizations and interested States.
