The article deals with the traditional manufacturing in the Arkhangelsk and Murmansk regions and the Udmurt Republic. The article determines the socio-economic features of modernization of some old industrial regions of the Russian Federation, as well as the expediency to single out the economy and ecology of the old-industry backward areas as a separate direction of regions studies.
