In the article the general principles and features of formation of strategy of a sustainable development of the region depending on its geographical position, the ecological, demographic and social tension, the saved-up economic potential and efficiency of its use are considered. Methodical approach to a choice of basic strategy of development of the region and its specification in the form of private strategy is offered.
