Optimization of number of municipalities in the Russian Federation: status, problems and prospects

The article deals with consolidation of municipalities. Data analysis of foreign experience and sample results Russian regions are showed, that the optimization of the number of municipalities is possible from a regional perspective and interests of citizen's united territories. The main causes of the problems are identified, and the prospects of the municipal division are formulated.
