In the article the main indicators of shipping are investigated. Paradoxical decrease in volume of transportations and goods turnover against the steady growth of foreign trade and cargo handling volumes in seaports of Russia is shown. The tendency of leaving of the Russian vessels under foreign flags is analyzed. The conclusion is drawn that the high share of the Russian vessels registered under a "convenient" flag, a low share of Russia in the world tonnage of merchant marine fleet and world shipbuilding pose threats for economic safety.

Keywords: maritime transport, ports, foreign trade, the volume of transported cargo, cargo handling, "convenient" flag "Novoship", International Transport Workers' Federation
