The article analyses contradictions of the strategic programming process in the Southern Federal District. Some regions, having developed the progress programmes, felt the need to develop strategies. Today, the Southern macro-region enters the new level of developing the strategic management system that requires reviewing and modernisation of the already approved federal macro-regional target programme "South of Russia" and the local target programmes and.
