The article ranks among the publications (following No. 6 and 7 of the past year) dealing with the issue of medium cities functioning. It should be noted that there are a number of approaches to the definition of a medium city, among them quantitative, functional, legislative, economic, social and town-planning ones. Though the supporters of this or that approach cannot suggest criteria giving complex and full characteristics of a city when used individually.
