The article characterises the Central Federal District, leading in Russia in many social and economical aspects. The reason is in its specific features, its geografic position, characteristics of population and human resources, existing specialised industries. Having analysed the current conditions in the district, the authors have defined the major problems and the prospects of the regional social and economic progress.
