In the article the main directions of development of the theory of optimum currency zones are considered. The analysis of influence of currency integration on economy of the certain countries and regions is carried out. The reasons of disintegration of the currency unions are established. Ways of introduction to financial systems of the countries of collective currencies are analyzed. Experience of the certain countries in the field of use of foreign currencies instead of national monetary units is investigated. The prospects of formation of new currency associations are estimated.
