The article discusses the reasons for appearance and the features of sovereign welfare funds’ functioning as large institutional investors. The dynamics of means under control and the results of work are analyzed, are revealed the basic sources of the losses of sovereign funds under the conditions of world financial crisis. Changes in investment strategy were considered and forecasts for the future activities of sovereign welfare funds were done.
