In article the basic characteristics of folk handicrafts are specified, the condition of folk handicrafts of Russia and the Nizhniy Novgorod region is analysed. The conclusion that one of the basic conditions of effective functioning of enterprises of folk handicrafts is stable state support at all levels of the power and innovative activity of enterprises of folk handicrafts is drawn.
