Subject. Features of the Russian marketplace market.
Objectives. To identify the distinctive features of the Russian marketplace market in comparison with foreign markets.
Methods. The methods of comparative, economic, statistical and institutional analysis are applied.
Results. The analysis showed that the Russian marketplace market has a high degree of localization and institutional specificity. Unlike most foreign markets, it is characterized by the dominance of domestic platforms, an insignificant position of foreign ones and a high proportion of non-platform sellers in the e-commerce market. At the same time, the Russian marketplace market is characterized by a combination of an oligopolistic structure with intense competition between sellers and the active development of ecosystem links with banking organizations. There are also no restrictions on multihoming for sellers and buyers in the Russian market. State regulation of the platform economy in Russia is in its infancy and is gradually becoming complex. It is revealed that universal platform competition models developed on the basis of Western markets require adaptation taking into account national peculiarities, including structural, regulatory and institutional factors.
Conclusions. The Russian marketplace market is a specific example of a platform system characterized by a high degree of localization, ecosystem development, and institutional transformation. These features form the prerequisites for updating theoretical approaches to modeling platform competition, expand the applied understanding of the patterns of the digital economy and create a scientific and practical basis for the formation of an effective national policy in the field of the platform economy.
