Subject. The article considers the environmental component of sustainability of regional economic systems, namely, its role in ensuring long-term balanced development of territories. Objectives. The purpose is to determine the degree of influence of environmental factors on regional economic systems’ stability, quantify the environmental potential of the subjects of the Siberian Federal District, perform their comparative analysis. Methods. The study draws on the systems approach, structural, logical, and comparative analysis, a methodology for assessing the potential by N.V. Shalanov, which enables to aggregate natural resource indicators, environmental quality, environmental infrastructure, natural and climatic conditions, and the level of environmental safety into an integral index. Results. The paper clarifies the definition of the concept of "ecological potential", gives the characteristics of its systemic properties and structural elements, and integral assessments of ecological potential of the subjects of the Siberian Federal District. It also includes the analysis of factors determining the dynamics of environmental potential in the regional context. The practical significance of the research is in the possibility of applying the findings for strategic and territorial planning, in the development of environmental and social regional policies, and in scientific research on sustainable development. Conclusions. Environmental potential is an important component of the integrated sustainability of regional economic systems, and its consideration in strategic management makes it possible to identify environmental constraints of development, formulate effective environmental policy measures, and ensure long-term balanced development of the territory.
