Subject. We analyze the electric vehicle market development abroad and in Russia, and factors affecting the development.
Objectives. The aim is to study how the emergence of electric passenger transport can affect the entire Russian automotive market.
Methods. We employ methods of logical and statistical analysis.
Results. The demand for electric vehicles in Russia is formed by individuals for private use, legal entities for commercial use, and the State. By the end of 2021, the level, at which the market begins to grow due to the actions of the buyer, rather than the seller, has not yet been reached in Russia. According to experts, this level will be achieved, when the share of electric vehicles is 3-5% of the total fleet of the country. The analysis of international experience shows that the main driver of electric vehicle fleet expansion is government agencies that support the creation of charging and refueling infrastructure and economic incentives.
Conclusions. The electric vehicle market development in Russia is at its early stage, therefore, its impact on the entire car market is currently insignificant. The electric car market in Russia has not yet reached the level, at which it starts to grow due to the actions of the buyer, and the seller. To achieve this level, the State support is required to create refueling infrastructure and economic incentives for the population.
