Importance The article addresses the system of State supported agricultural insurance in the Russian Federation. The issue is of special importance within the import phaseout policy implementation, as effective functioning of the agricultural insurance system is a key success factor of the country's food security enhancement. Objectives The study analyzes positive and negative trends in the sphere of State supported agricultural insurance in Russia. Methods We employ general scientific methods of research, statistical, comparative and historical methods. When processing and systematizing the information, we use the classification method and the systems approach. Results The paper discloses the following negative trends in the State supported agricultural insurance, i.e. insufficient level of insured farm animals; reduced volumes of State support; difficulties for farmers to get insurance claim payment, significant excess of the volume of government subsidies for insurance over paid insurance claims. Positive aspects include fighting against pseudo-insurance, enhancing the control over activities of agricultural insurers, and developing the institution of the mediation. Conclusions It is required to develop institutions of loss-adjusters and surveyors in the sphere of agricultural insurance, to improve infrastructure, to expand the network of agrometeorological stations to streamline the process of insurance compensation.
