Importance The article investigates gross value added by type of economic activity and economy, in general. Objectives The purpose of the study is to improve the methodology for assessing the contribution of economic activities to economy. Methods The study employs a set of methods of statistics, i.e. groupings, average and relative values, structure, dynamics, indices. Results We consider the methodological aspects of assessing the contribution of types of economic activity to formation of economy's gross value added, identify estimates characterizing the condition of types of production activities and their contribution to economic development. We offer using the methods of statistics that take into account structural changes in separate stages of development. The paper analyzes trends in gross value added by types of economic activity and the entire economy of the country, investigates ratios of average annual rates of the changes that are calculated using the geometric average formula. Conclusions The modern strategy of economic development should rest on accelerated development of manufacturing industries, mining, and agriculture through optimizing the balance between manufacture, production, domestic consumption and export.
