Importance The unique tourist potential of the Sergiyev-Posad municipal district is traditionally in demand by tourists, including those traveling around Russia's Golden Ring. However, tourists mainly transit the area, and this is largely attributable to geographical location – Sergiyev Posad is considered a 'gateway' to the above tourist route, and insufficient accommodation and leisure infrastructure.
Objectives We aim to justify the feasibility of creating the tourism and recreation cluster Sergiyev Posad – The Gates of the Golden Ring of Russia, its structure and tourism specialization, and to offer a forecast of its development.
Methods To review the tourism supporting infrastructure of the cluster, we apply methods of structuring and statistical analysis. When assessing the prospects of the cluster development, we use predictive analysis methods.
Results The paper describes the background of the tourism cluster creation, underpins goals and objectives of the project. Special attention is on priority and promising types of tourism and key places of interest attracting tourists that make up the core of the cluster.
Conclusions The article includes the estimates of main indicators characterizing the development of tourism supporting infrastructure of the cluster.
