Importance Under sanctions and difficult geopolitical situation, developing the domestic production of capital equipment is a priority task of the State to ensure process safety. Objectives The article discusses the structure of the machine tool market, the place of domestic machine tool industry and the significance of its segments to analyze strategic prospects for modernization and their applicability for a number of enterprises operating in the domestic machine tool industry. Methods The study draws on methods of comparative and statistical analysis. Results The paper identifies major problems of machine-building enterprises, including the recent expansion of machine-building imports, the combination of investment in fixed capital of the industry and inadequacy of investment to create a new technological base for technological re-equipment of the Russian industry based on national research and development. Conclusions and Relevance The analysis shows that while developing the strategy of import substitution, it is necessary to replace those types of equipment that in the future may serve as a basis for modernization and re-equipment of machine-building enterprises, enable to maximize the revenue side of the budget and boost competitiveness.
