Importance When building a socially-oriented market economy, the policy of household income formation plays a decisive role.
Objectives The purpose of the study is to investigate remuneration and evaluate the status of income of the population.
Methods The study employs general scientific methods of knowledge (dialectical method, a combination of historical and logical unity, structural and functional analysis methods, traditional techniques of economic analysis and synthesis) and specific methods to evaluate a worthy salary.
Results The paper justifies the stimulating and reproductive nature of remuneration, identifies key problems related to labor compensation, evaluates the indicators of social tension (the Gini coefficient, decile ratios). The latter enabled to conclude on increasing disparity in income distribution, which is indicative of the ongoing process of social stratification. We offer approaches to determine social standards for household incomes.
Conclusions and Relevance The cost of consumer amenities required for the worker's and his or her family's life support should be the most important methodological guidepost when determining the level of remuneration. The findings may be applied when developing programs and strategies of socio-economic development at macro- and meso-levels, a concept of sustainable development, the doctrine of social security.

Keywords: remuneration, household income, incentive, reproductive function, differentials
