Subject Sustainability of the territory as its ability to provide growth of targets, move along the chosen path of development despite external disturbances, and make the best use of resources is a key task of territory formation within the boundaries of a certain region. Objectives The aim of the study is to develop and justify methodological approaches to sustainability of areas of innovative development, which should form the basis of monitoring and preventive management. Methods The methodological basis of the study includes the systems approach, functional approach, theoretical analysis, synthesis, and the dynamic normal theory. Results I present a dynamic normal system, which includes growth rates of the key socio-economic indicators characterizing the territory of innovative development. I created the dynamic normal and final reference graphs based on the functional approach, within which I identified the key functions of its components. The system rests on the efficiency principle implying maximal increase of results and relatively smaller increase of resources. Conclusions and Relevance The increased focus on sustainability of areas of innovative development will enable to reduce the risk of inefficient project implementation, and ultimately will influence the target function, i.e. achieving the highest results in the innovation sector and improving the life quality of the region's population.
