Importance Recently, foreign and domestic practices have considered the cluster approach as an effective tool to increase the competitiveness of territories' economy. Therefore, the study of clustering-related issues in Russia, including identification and assessment of potential clusters in industries is a crucial task at both the Federal and regional levels.
Objectives The study's objectives include the analysis and assessment of the clustering potential of the gold-mining industry of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
Methods Based on the analysis of methodological approaches to identifying and assessing the clustering potential of economic sectors published in foreign and domestic literature, we propose an adapted methodology to assess the composite index of the clustering potential of industries of the region.
Results We identified the groups of indicators characterizing the clustering potential of the industry, calculated composite indices of the clustering potential that demonstrate the average level of potential clusterization of the gold-mining industry of the Republic. The analysis of the mineral potential and positive results of scientific, educational and industrial potentials give grounds to speak about the possibility to create a gold-mining cluster in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The low potential of the social infrastructure is a negative factor for the clustering.
Conclusions The proposed methodological approach enables to analyze and assess the clustering potential of the basic branches of economy of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), which will subsequently determine the structural basis, form of organization, and location of the created cluster or a group of clusters of regional, interregional or international levels.
